Maryville-Melvin O’Dean Flynn, 84, formerly of Marion, died on Sunday, September 20, 2015 at 10:46am at the home of his daughter, Deborah Kay Bryan of Glenn Carbon, IL.
Melvin was born on February 15, 1931 in West Frankfort. He was an avid Cardinals fan who had many work experiences in his life. Melvin worked in the copper mines in Arizona, the coal mines in Illinois, had various jobs including T.V. repair, fast food, game reserve grounds keeper and school bus driver. He loved life and serving others and his biggest accomplishment was serving as a Bishop for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Melvin was a loving husband, father, grandfather and family patriarch who will be greatly missed.
He leaves behind his wife of 64 years, Mildred Ann (Gibbs) Flynn; a son, Randy Lee Flynn and a daughter, Deborah Kay (Flynn) Bryan and son in law James Allen Bryan; also surviving are six grandchildren: Nathan Morgan O’Dean Bryan and wife Tamara Kaye (Jones) Bryan, James Logan Bryan and wife Ashley Janelle (Morris) Bryan, Elizabeth Lee (Bryan) Sever and husband John Christopher Sever, Virginia Kay (Bryan) Wall and husband Apollo Wayne Wall, Carl Allen Bryan and fiancé Amanda Nicole Turner , Patrick Calvin Bryan and 10 great grandchildren.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, James Jackson Flynn and Cora Alice (Lee) Flynn; nine siblings, Barbara Evelyn Eggleston, Stella Mae Green, Laura Vivian Flynn, Calvin J. Flynn, Tressie Marie Harpool, Ethel Louise Baker, Lawrence T. Flynn, Una Belle Rutland and James Ladell Flynn and his son, Timmy J. Flynn.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at 2pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Johnston City with Bishop Scott Joyner officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be private. Blue Funeral Home in Marion is assisting the family with arrangements.
