Shelby Bailey

Goreville-Shelby Jean Bailey passed away on Monday, May 9th, 2016 at Daystar Nursing and Rehab Center in Cairo, Illinois after a lengthy illness. Ms. Bailey was born on September 24, 1937 in Goreville, Illinois to William "Gene" and Wilma (Ritchey) Hubbard. She was raised in Goreville and became the valedictorian of the Goreville High School Class of 1955. Always seeking adventure Shelby left Goreville after high school returning to her roots later in life. Shelby was a big believer in community involvement and was active in many groups, including:  Order of the Eastern Star, Serrano Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Girl Scouts, and a booster parent for the Glendora High School Plaid Piper Drill Team.  She also served as the church treasurer for the Goreville United Methodist Church from 1995 to 2001. Ms. Bailey worked for the Glendora Unified School District in Glendora, California for 25 years, and also was employed by the California Teacher's Association. Before her illness, Shelby enjoyed sewing, painting, quilting, antiquing, working on genealogy, and spending time with her grandsons. The family would like to thank the staff and administration at Daystar Nursing and Rehab for their excellent care.  A special thank you to Charge Nurse Debra Jeffers for her tireless dedication and love she gave to Shelby. Ms. Bailey is survived by her daughter Shanna Johnson, her son-in-law James Johnson III, her grandchildren, James Johnson IV and Evan Johnson. Other survivors include special cousins and friends.  She was preceded in death by her parents and favorite aunt and uncle, Ida Mae and Don Curtright. According to her wishes, Shelby will be cremated.  Private graveside services will be held at a later date with interment at Cana Cemetery in Goreville. Blue Funeral Home in Goreville is assisting the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Goreville School Drama Department, in care of Mrs. Barbara Stanley, 201 South Ferne Clyffe Road, Goreville, Illinois 62939.
